Photodynamic Therapy is a three step process that targets the cells causing the skin condition and destroys them. The first step is to apply a light sensitive drug, either topically or through injection, to the area with the problematic skin condition, the second step is to let that topical drug work for an amount of time, usually between 30 minutes to 24 hours, dependent on the severity and location of the condition. The third step is to expose the effected area to either a light source, which can range from being a laser, natural sunlight, red or blue colored light, or an LED, of a specific strength which then activates the light sensitive drug creating a reaction and destroying the skin condition.
