Acne Gets The Blue Light at Miramar Dermatology

Miramar Dermatology is proud to offer the latest in treatment for Acne. Blue Light treatment for Acne and for Actinic Keratosis is now available with easy treatments in our office.

What is Blue Light?

BLUE Light PhotoDynamic Therapy is the latest treatment of Acne and Actinic Keratosis to be approved by the FDA. Blue Light works by killing the P. acnes bacteria in your skin.

BLUE Light can be administered alone or together with a topical application of ALA and Levulin^® (aminolevulinic acid). New studies show that BLUE Light provides treatment for both active Acne lesions and other inactive sebaceous glands that are not creating active lesions, but have the potential to do so.

Does Blue Light treatment hurt?

NO, BLUE Light patients simply sit in front of the BLUE Light delivery system for about sixteen minutes. Patients receiving the topical application of ALA with their BLUE Light treatment sit with the ALA solution on for about thirty minutes, then sit in front of the BLUE Light delivery system for about eight minutes.

For Acne, Blue Light treatment requires 2 weekly sessions lasting about 8-20 minutes per treatment, a total of 6 treatments are required over a 3 week period.

Treatment is also available for actinic keratosis of the face and scalp with the Blue Light and with Levulin®. This treatment requires 2 sessions and you should expect the face to become red and irritated for 7-10 days following the treatment.

How much does Blue Light Cost and will my insurance pay for it?

Treatment for actinic keratosis of the face and scalp with the Blue Light and with Levulin® is covered by most insurance companies.

Because treatment for Acne with Blue Light has only recently been approved by the FDA, most insurance companies are not yet paying for the treatment. The cost for 6 sessions is currently $300.00.
