Recently, Miramar Dermatology/Skin and Cancer Associates upgraded to ThermaCool NXT, the next generation system for skin tightening and contouring. With this new device, we are able to perform Thermage treatments 20% faster than before, increasing efficiency while maintaining a high level of safety. Advances in the ThermaCool NXT system include a streamlined operating system and user interface along with a lighter hand piece with remote controls.

What Is Thermage?

Thermage was developed to help erase the signs of aging skin. It works by targeting collagen structures beneath the skin's surface to tighten and firm underlying skin tissue. On the face, it is used for treating periorbital (around the forehead and eye) wrinkles, tightening the cheeks and jowl area, and reducing sagging under the chin. The treatment also can also be used to tighten skin anywhere else on the body including breasts, thighs, and arms.

How Does It Work?

During your treatment, capacitive radiofrequency (CRF) energy uniformly heats the dermis while cooling and protecting the epidermis. The treatment is designed to cause immediate collagen contraction followed by new collagen production which occurs over a period of time. The Thermage procedure is the only non-invasive method to tighten, contour, and rejuvenate loose skin on the face, thighs, stomach, arms, and hands.

How long will the Thermage procedure take?

The procedure may take from 30 minutes to two hours depending on the number of treatment areas and the size of the area treated. You can elect to have your procedure performed with oral sedation in our office.

What does a Thermage procedure feel like?

Each time the ThermaCool NXT system delivers radiofrequency energy to the skin, you will feel a brief heat sensation, followed by a cooling sensation. In most instances, the energy can be adjusted so that no topical or local anesthetic is necessary.

When can I return to my normal activities?

Because the procedure generally involves no "downtime," you can return to your normal activities immediately. Depending on the degree of treatment, some patients may experience mild to moderate swelling or redness, and choose to take some time off after the procedure. There is no special care needed after treatment, though wearing sunscreen on the treatment areas is very important. Continuing to protect your skin will also prolong the results of your Thermage treatment.

When Will I See Results?

Because Thermage treatments affect the body's natural production of collagen, results from the procedure continue for many months. Most of our south Florida area patients see results gradually over two to six months, although some patients notice improvement as early as two weeks after treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

A single treatment has produced good results in many of our patients. However, Drs. Gottlieb and Goldman will assess the number and frequency of treatments required to achieve optimal results for your skin. Larger areas of the body, like the thighs, stomach, and buttocks may need more than one treatment to produce your desired results.

How long will the effects of the procedure last?

Recently published studies show that improvements continue for at least six months after a single treatment session. Other studies show that thermal collagen changes can last several years, depending on the rate of the aging process.

How safe is it?

All Thermage treatments are FDA approved, have been studied carefully on hundreds of patients, and are very safe. In rare cases skin damage can occur which is why it is important to go to doctors like Dr. Gottlieb and Dr. Goldman that are board certified dermatologist trained in this new technology.

Can Thermage be combined with other procedures?

The treatment can be safely combined with other types of rejuvenation, such as chemical peel, Botox® Cosmetic, Restylane®, Radiesse™ and laser therapy.
